Hidden Gems: Meet Liv Mills of Quality Exteriors
Apr 8, 2025
Today we’d like to introduce you to Liv Mills
Hi Liv, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, I’m Liv! I’m a 5th generation roofer, and I’m a woman in the industry where that’s uncommon. My grandfather started a roofing business in 1919, and I grew up in the industry. Though I grew up in the industry, I was not interested until later in my career. I was a journalism major, and landed my first job doing Major Gifts at Cornell University, raising gifts from $250k-10M for the #1 Hospitality School in the world. I transitioned from Cornell to a local rainwater bottle company, as I fell in love with the hospitality industry. From there, I consulted for many small to medium sized start ups, implementing growth, go to market strategy, and sales for various industries. Ultimately, I’m someone who sees the underdog, and the roofing and construction industry was attractive to me because there are not a lot of contractors who care for homeowners as if it is their own family, and this was the value I was raised to understand.
I’ve never met a stranger, I love to guide homeowner’s through insurance processes, protect them from an industry that’s known for the worst, and strive to implement deep care and love in every relationship and vocation I pursue!
This write up honestly sounds wildly professional for who I am, but I did used to write for a living so I suppose that’s a habit. 🙂
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all! Personally, I went through a rough divorce during the beginning of covid, I was in CPG launching a new water brand and had just landed a deal with Hilton World Wide when our world changed as we knew it. This brought forth various struggles, many uncertain relationships and brief endeavors, and most of what I’ve done has felt like I have fallen into the right place at the right time, ultimately ending where I started – roofing is in my blood!
It’s difficult to be a woman in this industry and be taken seriously, and I particularly enjoy bringing women into the industry because I’ve found, most times, they’re the best at it. I am tasked with developing many roofing contractors, personally achieving the top 1% in roofing sales on average, and mostly loving the sigh of relief homeowners feel when someone takes the time to genuinely care about them and what is often times their most valuable investment.
I lost everything in 2020 – I was outed, the business I was in was failing due to the nature of Covid, and I’ve grown to love Austin and the many many new friends I was able to meet through that process. It was so far from easy, but I’m grateful for that journey, because I don’t believe I’d be who I am or great at what I do without it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I chose to join Quality Exteriors as a partner after experiencing one of the biggest betrayals and heartbreaks with a business partner. It turned out that these owners had experienced similar disappointments with past relationships in the industry, and unfortunately, that is the common theme of an industry full of greed – both on the contracting and insurance side.
It felt like the stars aligned at the perfect time with the owners, their staff and the timing of where I was at in my split – honesty, integrity and people first were the hallmarks of our understanding that this was going to be a beautiful relationship, and I haven’t looked back since.
We offer a lifetime transferable labor warranty which is unheard of in this industry, and our sales team is not only paid on time, but we give equity in line with every sale for every single contractor that solicits sales and grows our business. Watching owners Josh Black and Peter Jago truly turn the greed and gross things about this industry into their strongest selling points is the very reason I decided to partner with them in opposition to being on my own.
Brand wise, we are a people first organization, and I haven’t met one person who values money over being an honest, kind human being first. No matter what, and especially internally. It shows in every aspect of the company, and especially where my word means the most – with a homeowner. I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
There are so many things in our industry that contractors charge for and is simply our standard. We’re the highest paying contractor, the hugest opportunity offering equity points for roofing sales, and growth empowerment that is achievable, honest and being currently lived out by every employee here. It’s inspiring to be a part of this team, and I don’t even work for my own father’s roofing company in Austin because the integrity of my word and who I work for means that much to me. Hands down best company I’ve ever worked for – including Cornell.
What are your plans for the future?
Planning to get more women into this industry! I’m excited about this year, it’s off to an unbelievable start, and we’re literally changing an industry’s taste in people’s mouth to something they crave. That’s been incredibly cool to witness first hand. Personally, I’m excited about growing a team here, educating future employees and homeowners on the changes in the industry and how it can save them massive amounts of money, and advocating for people who need an honest and sincere person to assist them through a repair that will protect their most valuable asset from what we call “Hail Alley”.
Big changes – we’re growing! And I’m thrilled to be a part of that growth, especially the aspect that places the right people in the right places that want to help people just as much as every person on this team! Women in this business is a huge goal of mine, as it can literally change your life and I’d love to have some girls with me learning an industry that’s primarily known for men.
